secret ingredients

My grandmother, Mamie Fox (lovingly called Granny), was a legendary cook in our little town of Tryon, North Carolina. Her cooking was legendary and many tried to replicate her recipes, with little success. The reason: there was always a little something missing, even though the recipe was followed to the letter.

When I was 4 years old, Granny placed a miniature table for me beside her large kitchen work table. She was making her lemon meringue pie and she was letting me “help” by making a tiny pie of my own. I remember watching her hands as she rolled the dough and trying to make my pie crust look like hers. Of course, when we finished our baking day, Granny’s pie was glorious; a beautiful golden brown crust, silky lemon filling, cloud-like meringue. My pie…not so much!!

Over the next 8 years, as Granny baked for family and her beloved church, I would be right there with her, listening to her, watching her, learning from her. I began to understand why no one could make a dish quite like my Granny. The secret ingredients in her recipes? Love, lavishly sprinkled on everything she made and generosity, the free and unreserved sharing of heart and soul with friend and stranger alike.

The seeds of Soulful Sweets were planted in that North Carolina kitchen many years ago. The memories of good food shared with family, celebrating holidays and special occasions together, spending time with the ones you love; these are the rich soil that brings this company to life. We want to bring you desserts that remind you of the exceptional moments in your life or maybe help you create some for your future. Try us today and see if we remembered to add Granny’s “secret ingredients”!
